UPM Corporate Venturing to cooperate with Australian Pemara in the sales and marketing of UPM Shelf Life Guard

(UPM, Helsinki, March 6, 2008) – UPM Corporate Venturing and the Australian Pemara Corporation have signed an agreement to begin the sales and marketing of the UPM Shelf Life Guard product in Australia. The cooperation aims to promote the use of UPM Shelf Life Guard within the Australian food industry.

UPM Shelf Life Guard is a packaging label that indicates if the protective package is intact. When the label colour changes from transparent to blue, the consumer is informed that air has replaced the modified atmosphere gases within the package due to a breach or leak.

The food industry uses modified atmosphere packaging for fresh meat, cutlets, coffee, cheeses, produce and fresh fruit. The advantages of modified atmosphere packaging are even product quality, enhanced product appearance, improved taste and nutritional values, and longer shelf-life.

Controlled or modified atmosphere packaging is a commonly used packaging format in the food industry. Air can lead to the deterioration of foodstuffs through the growth of harmful microbes, the loss of colour and aroma, the presence of odour, the loss of nutritional value, as well as changes in food structure such as drying, fading and staleness.
