Durable and environmentally friendly UPM ProFi – a new innovation of UPM

UPM pays attention to sustainability and friendliness to the environment while testing new raw materials and developing new products. You can see a great example of this while visiting UPM's stand at IfraExpo 2007, where one part of the stand floor is constructed from UPM's new innovation, UPM ProFi.

UPM ProFi is an environmentally friendly product where UPM is changing its waste to a new raw material. The principle raw material is surplus from UPM's label stock production, the self-adhesive label materials made of paper and plastic. It is a wood-plastic composite that combines the best characteristics of wood fibres and plastic.

UPM ProFi can be used in patios, playgrounds, garden buildings, jetties, marinas, boardwalks – and other challenging applications. The first commercial product, UPM ProFi Deck patio concept, has been received extremely well in Finland. It is considered as a significant new business opportunity for UPM.

The composite has proven highly durable and humidity resistant. "The product does not need any extra surface treatment, so it is environmentally friendly also because of that", explains Mr Markku Koivisto, Director of Corporate Venturing. The product can be disposed of by incineration or recycled back into the production process.

The material was present in Milan's International Furniture Fair in spring 2007. Architect Shigeru Ban designed a Pavilion constructed of UPM ProFi. The Pavilion was an excellent example of a new, innovative way to use wood raw material. It was reconstructed also in Helsinki for a month in September.
