Birdlife conservation area established in Janakkala, Southern Finland

The Häme Regional Environment Centre has protected an area of about 200 hectares (500 acres) for conservation purposes at Toivanjoki, Janakkala. Three quarters of the conservation area is on UPM’s grounds.

The Toivanjoki area is part of EU’s Natura 2000 network of protected areas and is an important feeding and resting area for migrating birds.

UPM applied for protection of the Toivanjoki birdlife area as part of the company’s biodiversity programme. The company prepares forestry and development plans for Natura areas owned by UPM in cooperation with its stakeholders. The plans determine the possibilities of using and developing the areas in accordance with EU directives.
