UPM is both a major forest owner and a purchaser of wood. UPM sources all wood assortments and uses optimally the valuable raw material: logs in plywood and sawn timber production, pulpwood in pulp and paper production and forest energy wood (branches. crowns and stumps) in energy generation.
In 2016, we sourced 27.8 million cubic metres of wood from around the world. The majority of wood is purchased from about 25,000 private forest owners.
Wood used in our products comes from sustainably managed forests and from legal sources. All our wood supplies are covered by a third-party verified chain of custody. We aim to use certified fibre to the highest possible degree and to promote a global increase in the use of certified wood. Today, 84% of the wood we use is certified.
All of UPM's own forests and eucalyptus plantations are certified according to the FSC® and/or PEFC™ certification schemes. In addition, UPM has an FSC® and PEFC™ Group Certificate in Finland , which are open to private forest owners.
In December 2016 the CDP Forest Program recognised UPM with a global leadership position in the 2016 Forest A List for timber and timber based products. The CDP's report examines what steps companies are taking to protect their supply chains and bottom-lines against deforestation-related risks. UPM press release 5 December 2016
